Where could you employ a MEDIA PERSON with a Master in Finance?
Hi. I am doing an internship in Capital Markets which is a very specialized area and I am learning the basics. I studied Media before, Communications. These guys are telling me to work in a field of media where knowledge of finance is needed, or start bottom bottom at my age in a lousy job in Finance. Could anyone tell me in which enterprises could you need a person who has the creative and a bit of the financial world?

Your best bet is to try for a job in the public relations department of a financial firm or a niche publication, such as a magazine or newspaper that specialises in business or finance.

To get a job in Investment Banking - M&A; what is better, Masters in Finance or Masters in Accounting?
If I want to get a job in Investment Banking - Mergers and Acquisitions; would it be better for me to get my Masters degree in Finance or Accounting? I am a current undergrad, double majoring in both Finance and Accounting. I just want to know what would be more likely to land me a job after school.

How much more would one earn a year with a masters in finance
How much more would one earn a year with a masters in finance?
as opposed to just having majored in finance and having a bachelors

About 9k a year.
2
Have a look at your "marketability". A young friend of mine majoring in Business has found that "the Bachelors degree today is about as common as high school graduation" and to have a good selection of employers, a Masters is needed.
3
It doesn't exactly work like that. You don't get paid by the degree - you get paid for a job. Some jobs happen to require certain degrees but that doesn't mean that just having the degree will get you the job or the money. Very many jobs that require a master's degree also require considerable experience for advancement. The exception is public school teaching and some government jobs. With a master's in finance you can apply for some jobs that a bachelor's holder can't even look at. Community College Instructor is one example. Having the master's if you want to be a community college instructor means you'll earn 100% more than the bachelor's holder because you can't get that job with a bachelor's degree. Many jobs don't require a degree at all. Get yourself one of those and you'll earn exactly what people that don't have a degree earn. For example: bank tellers don't need a master's degree and most don't have a bachelor's degree. In this example, the master's degree earns you exactly nothing. Clarify this idea and you'll become much happier. Job X pays $Y. It's that simple. Bartenders make a certain amount of money - even bartenders with a PhD in Philosophy. With some few exceptions (school teachers) - there is no benefit in the same position with/without the degree. Except; the degree is sometimes required to get the job and the degree holder will likely perform better and therefor advance faster. There is a common myth that a higher degree will automatically result in higher pay. This is due to a misinterpretation of some statistics - it's "generally true" but not "universally true". It's not the degree that earns the money - it's the person in a position (who may need a degree or experience or certification to reach the position). In your town, who earns more? Is it the person with a bachelor's degree that waits tables or the person with just a HS diploma that builds houses? What you need to look at then is occupations. Many occupations require a degree in finance. They don't all pay the same - even with the same degree. Look at the different occupations and determine what it is you want to do. Then find out what education and experience is required to do that. Don't confuse "what's your favorite class" with "what do you want to be when you grow up".

Being a Malaysian, you should know that with a Bachelors from a US Uni, you are probably over-qualified for a Masters in a Malaysian Uni. Have you kept up to date ? Try Singapore. :)
2
I received a mail from Concordia University in Montreal regarding the Master of Finance course. It's better to take full time and the average salary upon graduation is C$75000/year. University in Malaysia = University of Rubbish. Even our education minister sends his kids to Australia. HAHAHA Recommend: University of Manchester twinning at Sunway College
3
Do in UPM. They have the best postgrad business courses in Asia. Even foreign students flock there yknow!
4
If you strictly want to study under Malaysian uni, I believe Izzie is right. UPM is the most reputable uni for postgraduate studies. UiTM is reputable as well but not sure about their masterate programme and as you know, it only accepts bumiputra. UM? Well...... If you think only Malaysian uni just because you are only able to do it on part time basis, you may alternatively overseas uni that has twinning programme with Malaysian colleges (like Segi College) or overseas universities that offer long distance education programme.

You could do a search on "MS degree in finance" or whatever, or consult a guidebook for graduate programs, either printed or on line. Are you sure you'd need a Master's degree? If you already have experience, you may not - or you could work on it part-time while you work in the field, perhaps.

Be aware the program is in no way watered down and you have to work your butt off to make it just like you would in class.

You could try for any variety of jobs, including investment banking, equity research, retail banking, corporate finance, private wealth management, private equity, etc. Big cities like London, Paris, Frankfurt are good geographic locations for these types of jobs. I would suggest getting to the international websites of companies like Morgan Stanley, Citibank, Goldman Sachs, HSBC, etc. It all depends on the experience you have, what you specialized in within Finance, what you are interested in, etc. Also, do you speak any foreign languages? That'll help too.

why not? discuss this with your college counselor.
2
Why not get the M.B.A for business administration and a B.S. in Engineering? Than you could combine the two and run your own firm and know all the ins and outs of business.
3
at the same time?? i think that will be a little hard. but get one then the other.
4
You're probably better off with a Master's in Engineering Management or a Master's in Technology Management, if you want to start/manage a Technology company.

Master in Finance VS CFA?
which is it better to have if i plan to stay competitive in the job market as a financial analyst

CFA is easier with more bang for buck and time. However, if you can go to a top tiered Bschool, an MBA is nice. I am a CFP. I have an MBA from a smaller school and would rather have a CFA. I might still do it. I am doing well now but have had some trying years. It would really be cool if they combined a CFA with a Masters. I know they do that with CFP and CPA (or the education portion anyway). BTW-- I lot of corporations factor a CFA designation into making officer and high level management decisions. They REALLY respect it. Good Luck!
2
MS in Financial Engineering,At Baruch the grads are starting at 100K

If you had to pick one, I'd go with the CFA. But, if you can do both, then do both. My very first finance professor at NYU had a quote: A person with a graduate degree in finance might not know any finance. But, a CFA indicates that you (or anybody else) know, at least, some finance. And this guy is a total genius. He made so much money in the NYSE as a market maker/specialist that he retired after one year of working with them.

Go for the CFA! A Masters in Finance doesn't open up your career path in the same way that a CFA does. Also, CFA grads get a better salary right off the bat.

Definitely yes. Lots of finance jobs involve problem solving and explaining why your solution is best. You can go a long way with that combo.

No Pun intended but at the Masters level you probably should know the answer to your question. Seek out a career counselor or put together a resume indicating that you have 1 semester until you graduate. This will give you an idea of how many people will call you. Use a different name on the resume...remember you're just trying to get calls. Also use Salary.com to find out what your salary would be for that position.

Yes, go to the career/placement center at the University. They will have lots of "job opportunities" for you to look at that show the salary range. Remember you won't start out at a huge salary, but there will be lots of potential for increases. The sooner you get to the placement center the better, since companies will hire you before you have completed your degree... yes, they want to know you will be there for them when you graduate. Wouldn't that be nice, to have a job waiting for you. You won't have this happen if you don't go looking for those jobs NOW.

I work for a company that teaches you everything you need to know about finances and investments. You can earn while you learn and it is geared where you can do it and remain in college to get your masters. You also can get licensing to have you all set when you graduate If you are interested you may email me for more information. kathyreilly66@yahoo.com

As long as you get accepted into the graduate program you're okay. I would just take a look at those applications to see what kind of info they're looking for and if they have an undergrad degree preference. But really you could go in with any undergrad degree

Ummm... I should hope you could grasp this one by now if you're getting your undergraduate degree in accounting and are moving into finance :P. I majored in both and am finishing my master's of accountancy, and the two fields are EXTREMELY connected. Accounting lets you know the facts behind the numbers and how companies came up with them. In other words, a financial analyst who understands little about depreciation might not understand that two companies, who seem the same when using profitability ratios, might use different methods of depreciation. This can help you weed out some of the accounting gimmicks in financial statements (that us auditors also try to find!) and find the true profitability of the company's operations. If one company is making the same profit as another but using an accelerated depreciation, it's operation could be more profitable than they look. It also gives you a better understanding of inventory valuation methods (though this will not be as big a factor with the coming of IFRS), intangible impairments, and how to read the notes to the financial statements to pick out important topics not shown in the financials. Hope that helped a bit :). There are many other reasons why a background in accounting is great for a future in finance, but those are just a few off the top of my head. Good luck on your applications!

wont be that difficult but it would be alot easier if you have an offer from some company in netherlands before applying for visa , cause that offer can act as a major document(to complete the visa formalities) for getting a work permit

Is Computer Science considred a quantitative major for finance jobs
Is Computer Science considred a quantitative major for finance jobs?
I want to work in investment banking/ finance after college, and was wondering if Computer Science would be a good quantitative major for an undergraduate degree. Ultimately, I want to get an MBA right after or at least a Masters of Finance degree before I start working.

It is and it isn't. Depends on what part of the financial sector you want to apply for, after college. A computer science degree is a definite plus for these institutions, but you would need to have studied some related units. Investment banks would look for specific related units: Quantitative Methods Management Accounting Economics Capital Management/Corporate Finance. A degree in information systems and management fits the bill, but a pure computer science degree is not a pertinent subject, unless you want a job in IT. So, your plan to do an MBA is an excellent career move. Good luck.

I agree with the first answer. I would encourage you to go for your MBA in finance. Have a great day!

If you want to work in investment banking, just note that you need to attend an MBA from a top ranked program. It's as simple as that. Computer science is a great degree to get (assuming you're interested in it), as it allows you real professional work experience in a major company, which is what any half-decent MBA program is going to require.
